April-June 2009 - Summer High-School Film Program

The MIAMI FILM ASSOCIATION is proud to announce the first "MFA Film Camp". This new program will be an 8-10 week hands-on approach to filmmaking, focusing on the principles behind professional production, implementing much of the same techniques and even equipment used by film studios and independent production houses. The first 4-6 weeks of the program will begin on a one night per week basis focusing on a different element of production each night (such as the pre-production process, directing/producing, cinematography, sound design etc). Each night will be 2 to 3 hours, with half of the class time focused on the principles and techniques used including samples and breakdowns of both blockbuster films & modern independents, with the second half of each class being a hands-on time using real production equipment to implement the concepts learned. In addition, *special guests* may be brought in from time to time to discuss specific elements and interact with the students, either in person, or via conference-call from Los Angeles or New York.

In the final 2-4 weeks (June), the entire class will essentially become its own "Production Company" and produce an entire short-film, from conception through production. Each student will take on a specific role in the production and on set, with the goal of creating both the most realistic and true to life experience of producing a film, including the command-structure implemented on-set and real equipment used by professional companies, as well as having a whole lot of fun in the process.

Please note: The program's specifics (including dates and enrolment fees) are still being finalized. This program will only be open to students aged 14-18, students may have already graduated from high-school. While no prior experience with production (film or otherwise) is required, all students must have a prior love and appreciation for film as an art form, as entertainment, AND as a business. While film is an exciting medium of expression, it's not ALL fun and games, students will have to be dedicated to the program, work hard, and be open to new ways of thinking, while not afraid to be challenged by the instructors (who are all professional filmmaker's themselves).

Complete program information and enrolment vouchers will be available beginning in September of 2008. Because enrolment for this program is VERY limited, enrolment will be considered on a first-come first-serve basis. The MFA may, if they feel the need, restrict the "Film Camp" participation further at the instructor's own discretion. If you would like to have an MFA staff-member speak to your school in person about this (or other MFA programs), or if you have any immediate questions, please CONTACT US to schedule a meeting or on-site visit.
